Napa General Store has closed
After weeks of reports and questions, we learned Sunday that the Napa General Store, a fixture in downtown Napa since 2002, shortly after the Napa Mill was renovated, has closed, apparemntly permantently.
Under original owners Jill and Jim Brandt, it was a magnet for breakfasts and lunch as well as wine tasting and Napa merchandise. They sold it in December 2022 to Michael Schuchardt. We’ll let you know when we learn of the plans for that space.
Oke Poke is open
Napa native Jill Barrett opened Oke Poke in north Napa on Aug. 9. The grand opening is Sept. 7.
The restaurant is in the Poppy Bank Plaza at the corner of California Boulevard and Permanente Way near Kaiser.
It is a franchise; she is the first franchisee of Oke Poke, which is based in Walnut Creek. Her husband, James, worked in Walnut Creek for years and went to the restaurant all the time.
He introduced Jill to the owners a year and a half ago, and they decided to bring it to Napa. Oke Poke
They serve poke bowls, pokerritos and poke nachos, along with staples like miso soup, Dole whip soft serve and...shave ice. They do have cooked options.

Napa Valley Coffee Roasting Company closing St. Helena café
The St. Helena Star reports that the Napa Valley Coffee Roasting Company’s St. Helena shop will close on Wednesday, Aug. 14, after 33 years in business.
The company’s Napa coffee shop will remain open.
The company said that a new café will open in the next months at its soon-to-be former St. Helena location at the corner of Adams Street and Oak Avenue.
Other places specializing in coffee have opened in St. Helena in recent years, including Valley Caffe, Station and Noma. And, of course, St. Helena is becoming more and more a town of second homes, so fewer people live and shop there.

Simon Family Estate opens tasting room on third floor in Napa
Family-owned Simon Family Estate has opened a tasting room on the third floor of the building by Napa Creek next to the Opera House in downtown Napa. Vincent Vitale broke the story in the Press-Democrat. The new tasting room is in a historic building that was once part of the Napa Opera House.
The Simons are Armenian Christians who fled Saddam Hussein’s Iraq and developed a successful diverse portfolio of companies.
They developed a love of wine on visits to wine regions overseas. In 2007, they began making their own wine at Napa Valley Reserve, where they remain members.
After 15 vintages of sharing their creations with friends and family, the couple launched the Simon Family Estate label in 2019, hiring Maayan Koschitzky as their winemaker.
Koschitzky had farmed vineyards in his native Israel before moving to Napa Valley. He has made wines for Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle and Atelier Melka, where he continues to serve as director of winemaking.
The tasting room is open by appointment only.

Notes from Paul
Letting an opportunity slip away
Paso Robles has announced the first International CAB Symposium from Oct. 30 through Nov. 3 in Paso Robles.
The promotional material from Linda Sanpei, the founder of the new conference and a respected marketer and publicist, reads: “This five-day global gathering of some of the finest producers in the world hopes to become the premier platform for celebrating and exploring Cabernet and Bordeaux (CAB) varietal wines.”
Paso Robles? But isn’t Napa Valley the source of the best Cabernet Sauvignons in the world? Even more than Bordeaux, where some wineries use “inferior” grapes like Merlot (Pétrus) or Cabernet Franc (Cheval Blanc with Merlot)?
How can Paso host the meeting?
Well, obviously because Napa didn’t.
The Meritage resort tried to establish a Cab conference, but it didn’t receive support.
According to Sanpei, “ICS will unite leading winemakers from around the world, offering an unparalleled opportunity for producers, industry professionals, media and wine enthusiasts to delve into the nuances of terroir, clonal selections and stylistic choices of these renowned varietals. Attendees can look forward to a series of masterclasses and a diverse lineup of events, including tastings, galas, lunches and dinners, to enhance their understanding and appreciation of Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux reds.”
Many noted wineries from around the world, including top names from Bordeaux and respected wineries from Napa Valley have signed up for the conference, including Black Stallion Estate Winery, Chimney Rock Winery, Clif Family Winery & Farm, Cliff Lede Vineyards, Clos du Val Winery, David Arthur Vineyards, Force & Grace, Hourglass Winery, La Jota Vineyard, Louis M. Martini Winery, Pine Ridge Vineyards, Realm Cellars and Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery.
For more information on the conference, visit www.internationalcabsymposium.com.
I should note that wineries that garner the highest scores, i.e., typically that cost the most in most cases, don’t enter competitions or participate in events where they can be bested by cheaper wines. This phenomenon is called The Emperor’s New Clothes Syndrome by marketing psychologists.
Too many events
Readers often complain that NapaLife is too long and that it contains too much information. I ask them what to leave out, but never get a consistent response.
I have attempted to shorten it, notably events that happen every week, but I don’t feel it’s my place to judge taste and interest.
I do draw the line sometimes. Some organizations like Nimbus Arts, the college and adult education, but especially the libraries in the county, create an overwhelming number of events, most aimed at kids, who aren’t my target audience.
In particular, I invite you to check out napalibrary.org, if you have young kids or teenagers.
I welcome your thoughts at paul@paulfranson.com.

Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura

Bullied to the point of dropping out of school, Kokoro’s days blur together as she hides in her bedroom, unable to face her family or friends. As she spirals into despair, her mirror begins to shine; with a touch, Kokoro is pulled from her lonely life into a resplendent, bizarre fairytale castle guarded by a strange girl in a wolf mask. Six other students have been brought to the castle, and soon this marvelous refuge becomes their playground.
The castle has a hidden room that can grant a single wish, but there are rules to be followed and breaking them will have dire consequences. As Kokoro and her new acquaintances spend more time in their new sanctuary, they begin to unlock the castle’s secrets and, tentatively, each other’s.

The NapaLife Insider’s Guide to Napa Valley, mid-2024 edition The mid-2024 edition of the NapaLife Insider’s Guide to Napa Valley is now available. This edition is heavily updated. There have been vast changes in Napa Valley in the last few years, with many restaurants and wineries, lodgings and venues for the arts changing, closing or opening. For those who live here, it’s a great reference and you’re sure to learn things you didn’t know. It’s also the perfect gift for friends and relatives to entice them to visit but also to save you from answering questions and giving tours. For inns, it’s a great addition to the library or coffee table, or even each room. Wineries can sell it in their tasting rooms, and their staff will find information to impress visitors. You can buy copies locally at Bookmine, The Napa Valley Visitor Center, The Wine Train Station, Jessel Gallery and other places in the valley. You can also order it on Amazon for $19.95. A Kindle version is $4.95. To buy bulk copies including for resale in a winery, hotel or store, email paul@paulfranson.com. |
